Want to step up your at-home yoga practice? Whether you’re a beginner or a true pro, completing your home flow space with a few pieces of essential yoga equipment goes a long way.
With so many types of props and apparel—and about a billion brands out there catering to yogis—though, figuring out what you really need to level up your home practice can take you from chilled out to stressed out in five minutes flat. Don't let that keep you from getting zen, though!
Of course, all you *really* need to get flowing is a mat. Beyond that, though, the right clothing (think soft, comfortable, and breathable) can help you get moving and tune into your body and mind without having to worry about adjusting your outfit from pose to pose. From there, you might want to consider a few go-to props, like blocks, a strap, and a bolster. This equipment can help you settle into all sorts of positions with more ease, so you can reap yoga's benefits every time you hit the mat.
Time to upgrade that practice! WH chatted with Eve Lynn Chrust, CPT, RYT, a yoga instructor at Obé Fitness to get the scoop on her top home yoga equipment picks. Start here if you want to create yourself the happiest home yoga space you can dream up. Add the following gear must-haves to your cart, turn up that playlist, light a few candles, and get ready to get zen.
The first thing to add to your at-home yoga setup? A set of yoga blocks. Personally, Chrust prefers the softness of foam yoga blocks to the firmer feel of cork ones. "I like the Gaiam blocks," Chrust says. "They're simple and traditional." They also come in a bunch of different designs and colors to match your at-home studio vibe.
Chrust loves a yummy restorative flow—and this Sunday Citizen bolster is her pick. The soft but supportive pillow allows you to ease into all sorts of poses comfortably and props you up in all the right places.
Why does Chrust love this yoga strap, you ask? Becauses it's made of simple, strong, soft cotton and comes in a bunch of different colors, so it'll match whatever vibe you're going with for the rest of your gear.
"I just bought a Liforme mat and I love it," says Chrust. "It's the right amount of sticky and soft and it's also nice and thick. I use one at Obé as well." This biodegradable option comes in a handful of bright colors and features a design intended to help you perfect your positioning and maintain proper alignment.
Get sweaty during your yoga flow? You need a mat-sized towel! "Lululemon is great for this," says Chrust. She loves the brand's The Towel because it not only comes in trendy patterns but is also a little sticky, which means it *actually stays* on your yoga mat. Plus, unlike some other towels, it's perfectly-sized for your standard mat, so you know it won't come up short (literally).
When it comes to sports bras, it's best to flow in whatever you feel most comfortable and supported in. Chrust's first pick, though? "I'm really into Spiritual Gangster right now," she says. "[Their bras] are stretchy but still supportive and come in the cutest colors and prints." This one is made of nylon and has a seamless band design, so you won't feel deal with any itchiness during your downward dog.
"I'm a sets girl, so I want to shout out Spiritual Gangster here again," says Chrust. "Their leggings are awesomely high-waisted, which feels good to flow in for me." This pair feels like butter and is totally seamless, so you'll feel cozy and ready to move.
Meditation cushions are typically big and poofy, but you don't have to have one in order to find a comfortable seat for your meditation practice. "I use my Purple Seat cushion for a meditation pillow," says Chrust. "It's so comfy." She loves that it provides easy support to your bum as you do breathwork without taking up too much space.
