Texarkana, Texas, cuts ribbon to open new fitness equipment space in Spring Lake Park

TEXARKANA, Texas -- The city on Tuesday officially opened the latest addition to Spring Lake Park, an outdoor gym that is free and open to the public.

Called a Fitness Court, the patented circuit training space is an invention of San Francisco-based company National Fitness Campaign. In a 32-foot square space, equipment allows users to do a variety of exercises at seven stations: core, squat, push, lunge, pull, agility and bend. Fitness Courts are supported by a smartphone app for users, and each provides space for public art.

During the event, city police officers and firefighters demonstrated use of some of the facility's exercise stations.

Funding for the project includes grants from National Fitness Campaign, the American Electric Power Foundation, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, and the city's parks capital improvement budget.

Mayor Bob Bruggeman thanked city staffers, as well as AEP and Blue Cross.

"We want to thank you both for your interest in helping build a healthier community by bringing an outdoor Fitness Court to Texarkana," he said. "We are also excited to see our parks grow, and we look forward to seeing our community benefit from this latest addition."

Robin Weatherby with Blue Cross said the company partnered with National Fitness Campaign in early 2022 to help fund 20 Fitness Courts in Texas. Texarkana's was the eighth of the 20, she said.

"We're excited to complete this initiative by the end of 2023 in order to provide free, accessible exercise access and structures for people of all ages and ability levels.

"We know on average that one in two adults don't get enough physical activity in their day-to-day lives, which can lead to chronic yet preventable conditions," Weatherby said.
