Police arrest man after report of Brighton bike theft

More than half a dozen police officers scrambled to a city street as they responded to a report of a man stealing a bike.

Four squad cars sped to Jubilee Street, Brighton, at 10.20pm on Thursday before officers jumped out and tackled a suspect, taking him to the ground.

He was restrained and was heard begging to be let go, but when cops found him in possession of a spanner it was all over and he was bundled into the back of a police car.

Officers were seen taking photographs of a bicycle while the spanner was loaded into an evidence bag.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: "Police responded to a report of a man stealing a bike from Jubilee Street at 10.20pm on Thursday (June 1).

"Officers attended and detained a 22-year-old man, of no fixed address, at the scene.

"He was searched and found to be in possession of a spanner.

"He was subsequently arrested for attempted theft of a pedal bike and going equipped for theft. He remains in custody at this time."

A bystander counted seven officers at the scene.
