International Day of Yoga: Mats, apparel, equipment, classes you can buy online

If you haven't tried yoga, commit today. June 21 marks International Day of Yoga. Fortunately for us, we started last week. Sure, we’ve tried yoga before. But this time we’re so committed that we’re buying our own mat and new yoga clothes.

The more product descriptions we read, the more we learned. Below is a buyer's guide for all things yoga, including mats, clothing, accessories and online classes.

Once we realized we needed to spend $50-$100 for a beginners’ mat, we struggled to decide colors and design. Did we want to fade into the background with basic black, or stand out with a graphic. Read on to see what we chose.

Lululemon offers rubber mats 3mm thick (starting at $68) and 5 mm thick (starting at $78) that are made with an antimicrobial additive to prevent mold and mildew. Available in solid and colorful options, these should be avoided by those with latex sensitivities.

Alo Yoga sells mats in myriad solid colors in regular ($100) and long lengths ($130). These odor-less mats are made of rubber.

In its Pro Series, Manduka retails 7 mm thick mats ($129), 4.7 mm thick mats ($99) and 2.5 mm thick mats ($75). The foundation or beginner series mats have lower price points ($55-$65). All are latex-free.

I chose the 8mm Nuveti non-slip mat ($48.99, Amazon). It's made of eco-friendly TPE so there's no rubber or latex sensitivities to worry about. Its odor-free and comes with a bag. I chose to go with a peaceful image instead of a solid color.

One of my BFFs swears by BeyondYoga apparel, for good reason. The leggings come in all lengths, waist rise and a variety of colors. And they’re made in the USA. The space-dye caught in the midi, high-waisted legging ($97) are a best seller.

In addition to a broad selection of BeyondYoga, Nordstrom sells Nike, Adidas and other brands.

Fabletics carries a variety of yoga wear and has an impressive selection of sports bras for high-, medium- and low-impact activities. The oasis twist bra is a good basic. Prices are lower if you join the VIP club.

Outdoor Voices carries flexible yoga & studio wear for men and women. A recent reviewer says, "Literally the best athletic leggings ($88) ever. They’re so stretchy but still hold you in really nicely. Perfect length, and high waisted enough. They couldn't be any better."

If you buy your yoga mat from Backcountry, they have one of the best cotton batik yoga bags ($39.95) to go with it.

The embroidered mat bag ($19.98) from Gaiam has a perfect yoga vibe. At 30 inches, it's longer than most. Alas, my 32-inch mat won't fit.

One of the larger yoga mat bags, Lululemon's Adjustable Yoga Mat Bag ($68) fits keys, phone and other necessities.
