Teen, 2 horses dead when car crashed into 3 people on stolen horses

One teenager and two horses are dead after a car crash on a Texas freeway.

A teenager riding a stolen horse in the dark on a Texas freeway is dead after being hit by a car.

The 14-year-old rider was accompanied by two other teenagers all riding stolen horses when the car crashed right through them early Tuesday, authorities said. The 14-year-old died at the crash scene, but the two others were taken to a local hospital for injuries and are currently in stable condition.

One of the horses also died as a result of the crash, and another was euthanized, police said. The third horse was injured but is expected to live.

Details on when the horses were stolen or where they came from weren't immediately released.

Law enforcement also added the driver remained at the scene after the crash and is not expected to face charges. Police have also not said what charges the teenagers may face.

According to Texas law, people are allowed to ride horses on roads and freeways and are considered non-motorized vehicles, similar to bicycles. But the Texas Department of Public Safety advises riders not to take horses out in the middle of heavy traffic or at night.

The crash happened at Great Trinity Forest and Julius Schepps Freeway in Dallas.
