Starting Monday, a new program will provide free bikes for people in Northwest Arkansas.

Ozark Regional Transit is partnering with Pedal It Forward to travel across Northwest Arkansas and deliver bikes to people in need.

Joel Gardner, the executive director of ORT, said it can usually get people pretty close to their final destination on the bus routes, but the bikes will help people get the rest of the way there.

"Being able to take a bicycle onto the bus and then use it to get through that last mile of where you're going, that's really important," Gardner said.

Kenny Williams, the executive director of Pedal It Forward, said people will get a bike, a helmet and a bike lock.

"People are extremely excited, whether it's to get out for some exercise or to get to a much-needed job interview or appointment, a bike brings a smile always," Williams said.

The bikes are donated by businesses and other people in the community and volunteers refurbish them.
